Barracks Road Shopping Center
Charlottesville, VA
Scope
Originally developed in the late 1950s, Barracks Road Shopping Center is a boutique shopping and restaurant center serving The University of Virginia and Charlottesville communities. With such a prominent location, the owner invested in a revitalization of the center. The most dramatic renovation was to the fountain courtyard area, with a complete removal of the existing concrete canopy. New design elements include outdoor dining, a trellis structure, lounge seating areas, screening walls, lighting design and a central fountain. Other main areas of focus included a seating area with a trellis in the North End of the shopping center, and a landscape and hardscape refresh around the perimeter of two main retail and restaurant buildings. STUDIO39’s involvement continues with additional softscape and hardscape as well as place making opportunities as new tenants and pad sites move into the center.
