DDOE Certifies District’s First Stormwater Retention Credits at The Westchester Apartments

06.09.2014

At the end of April, the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) certified 51,249 Stormwater Retention Credits (SRCs) for four large rain gardens at The Westchester Apartments in Northwest DC. Through the Stormwater Retention Credit (SRC) trading program, projects that trigger stormwater regulations may buy and use SRCs or pay an in-lieu fee to meet their requirements for retaining stormwater.

STUDIO39’s scope at the Westchester Cooperative included designing the landscaping master plan while taking care to maintain the contextual sensitivity of the site. A focus on managing water runoff was vital for the historic property and led to the creation of the four rain gardens. In addition to designing the rain gardens, STUDIO39 preformed site inventory and analysis, improved pedestrian accessibility and circulation, and lead design charettes resulting in a deliverable documenting the interactive design process.
