CANstruction 2021
12.02.2021
CANstruction is an annual competition that brings together local teams to design and construct amazing works of art made entirely out of canned goods. After the competition, all donations are given to The Capital Area Food Bank in Washington D.C. This year the competition took place at the National Building Museum. This was the first time STUDIO39 led a team with total involvement in the entire process from start to finish.

STUDIO39’s 2021 Canstruction
Seeing the world through the eyes of a child can be described as pure and authentic joy. Published in 1962, The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats was the first color picture book to have a black child as the main character and hero, a book that allowed young children of color to read about a character they could connect with. The iconic Caldecott Award winning book is illustrated with vivid colors and depicted with a unique mix of gouache and collage.
As you view our canned food model of The Snowy Day, we invite you to picture the snow piled up high like mountains around Peter and imagine the loud crunch of snow as his feet sink in the soft terrain, leaving a trail of footprints. Remember the joy of immersing your body in a pile of snow to make angels. Feel the chill creep over your body after spending hours and hours outside playing and wandering about, unbothered by the cold and discomfort. Recall that feeling of worry at days end that the bountiful piles of snow will melt while you sleep, but upon waking, looking out the window to see new snow falling and a new day of adventure beginning! The Snowy Day continues to enchant children today and we hope that you feel a dash of delight while viewing our model.
